Ashamed, Dionysus, as a sign of remorse, poured wine on the stone as a gift, thus turning it purple. It was a traditional belief that amethyst prevented drunkenness, and in ancient Rome and Greece, amethyst cups were made with the belief that a person would hardly get drunk from such a cup.
